Swedes have been settling the coastal areas of Northwest Estonia and various islands for over 1000 years.
There could be multiple reasons for the settlement: probably the seafarers of that time were interested in coastal settlements to have safer points of support during voyages, as well as the Baltic German nobility being interested in Christian peasants, and certainly, it is also related to the timeless human desire for adventure and the wish to see and conquer new uninhabited areas.
The permanent exhibition introduces the history of Estonian Swedes from ancient times to the present day.
The Coastal Tapestry tells the story of the Swedes who came to Estonia about 1000 years ago.
