The smoke oven of Mensaste proudly stands on the courtyard of the Museum of the Coastal Swedes, by the seaside. This smoke oven was originally located at the end of Sadama Street and used by the Swedish-speaking Estonian fishermen and fish merchants of the Mensaste family, originating from Aulepa village, Noarootsi parish. It was built between the wars (1918-1939) and continued to be used after the Second World War by Alexander Mensas. In 2010, Tõnis Stamberg and Mait Saar donated the oven to the museum. The relocation and reconstruction of the smoke oven were supported by Einar Hamberg, the Riguldi-Noarootsi Community Association, and Sture Koinberg. The work was carried out by Resteh OÜ. Currently, the smoke oven is actively used. Here, during the museum’s fish smoking days, herring, flounder, perch, and plaice are prepared. Several times during the summer at the smoking fish days, the museum courtyard bustles pleasantly with the aroma of smoked fish. Live music, an outdoor café, and delicious smoked fish always attract many museum enthusiasts.
